Opal is a highly valued and much loved gem with a long history of use. Opal’s main characteristic is that it has varying shifting depths of color, which often resembles the shifting colors of water. It is also said to contain the wonders of the skies as well, rainbows, lightning and fireworks.

Opal is the combined beauty of all other gemstones, with many colors flashing in its depths. Opals were much adored by the Romans and treasured in the Middle Ages, as they were thought to be beneficial to eyesight. Opal is October’s birthstone. Most opals are found in Australia. The Boulder Opal is unique in that it has a natural dark background in which to view it’s fire. The Fire Opal is a volcanic gem from Mexico and ranges in color from yellow through to red. Pink Opal is a soft yet dense pink, which can resemble coral. Doublets are assembled Opals which would normally be too thin to be set.
