The Rare Gem Collection:

Peridot is always a distinctive green, although its color can range from a fresh, apple green to a deep, olive green. It is often found in the rocks created by volcanoes and has even been discovered in meteors that have fallen to earth, which is why it is sometimes known as the extraterrestrial gemstone. Peridot was first mined in ancient Egypt where legend says that it had to be mined at night because it was not visible in daylight. Peridot was then brought to Europe by the Crusaders and was extensively used to decorate churches and shrines. Peridot is the birthstone for August and is thought to have the mythical power of wealth. It was also thought to drive away evil spirits, especially when set in gold. Today, Native Americans mine most Peridot in Arizona.
